Counseling for Chronic Pain

If you are suffering with chronic pain or chronic illness, it’s easy for it to take over your life. You might feel that others just don’t understand and you may be isolating yourself, no longer living your life the way you used to. One of the worst aspects about dealing with chronic pain is the feeling of helplessness and feeling like “there is nothing I can do about this”.

Counseling and specifically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for chronic pain management helps people create a sense of control by identifying and developing skills to change the negative thoughts and behaviors that can increase an individual’s experience of pain. By changing these thoughts and behaviors, people can change their awareness of pain and develop healthier coping skills.

CBT, combined with clinical hypnosis, can help change the physical response in the brain that worsens pain. Since pain causes stress, and stress affects the experience of pain, CBT can reduce the arousal in the brain and increase the body’s natural pain relief response.
